One thing is gonna save us.
And frankly, it ain't love.
Walking is gonna save all our lives if we let it.
Listen, you don’t have to take my word for, just like we never had to take Levar Burton’s. But if you’ll recall, he was always fucking right, and so I am when I say: I’ve done the reading, I’ve done the research, I’ve checked the data and cross-referenced the citations and the truth is this—
If we literally cannot do anything else for our health at all, walking, sleeping, and reading have the biggest combined effect on our long-term mental and physical wellness.
Taking a walk every day can and will absolutely change how you feel.
If you’re bold enough to do it without a phone to intermittently gaze at, all the better.
One of the reasons walking is great for our moods and nervous systems is because it activates a wider peripheral vision than we usually have. This unconscious processing of a wide swath of area be in Danger Free tells our bodies and brains we are safe.
Having this head up, eyes forward posture—without distraction—is one of the best things you’ll do in any given day.
Walking after meals helps your blood glucose and aids in digestion. Walking improves the quality of your sleep. Walking tacitly engenders community.
Walking is gonna save us all, if we let it.
But if we continue to stay seated at work and home, we’re gonna die about it. Let’s get up together and get to steppin’. No one said 10,000 steps—in fact, no one said anything about the distance or minutes or steps or any measurement.
Do whatever is, for you, more. That’s it. Measure it how you want, how it makes sense, how you can keep up with it, how it makes sense to you, whatever.
Let me know if you’re taking any walks this week and if you are, what will you be listening to?
Love,
Margaret
P. S. I created a souped-up tarot forecast for my bestie's little sister's fortieth birthday, and called the Forty-cast. Would you be interested in learning more about that? I might release a few spots for others in the next month or so, and this makes an unbelievable gift for the 1985-6 babes among us xoxox. No commitment I'm just gauging interest--click the button to let me know that's something you'd wanna hear more about when I get to talking about it in August.
